Valentine’s Day Shipping Deadlines for Popular Wine Clubs

A couple of days ago, I wrote about the expected shipping deadline for Valentine’s Day and how that meant, since dude’s don’t plan ahead, wine clubs can’t market it much.

Then I thought, maybe I’m crazy. So, I asked some popular wine clubs what their shipment cutoff time was to both San Francisco (where I live) and New York, to approximate the 65% of the population who lives on eastern time zone.

There are some interesting dates aren’t they?

Lastly, it’s worth a note that I sent these requests on Monday morning, January 31st, 2022.

Ok, so as you can see, that’s all over the map. This also speaks a bit to those wine clubs giving good customer support and those that do not. Here’s two examples of what I’d consider, bad customer support:

First, from Wall Street Journal:

Dear Mark Aselstine,
Thank you for your email.
Unfortunately there is no guarentee of delivery by a certain date.  Our orders can usually take 7 to 14 days to reach our customers from the date that the order is placed.

Outside of the misspelling which I get, happens, what was the point of even responding?

Here’s Winc:

Thank you for reaching out to us. I hope this email finds you perfectly well!

I understand that you wish to know if we have a deadline for shipping for Valentine’s Day. We actually have no shipping deadline. However, order processing could take up to 1-2 days and shipping and delivery time is 3-5 business days so we suggest placing an order earlier so you’d be able to receive it on or before Valentine’s Day.

I hope this helps. Should you have any further concerns, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to help.

Have a great day and keep safe!

Again, did Winc customer service actually help me? Not really. They could easily have done the math about when something should be ordered based on what they told me, but didn’t want to committ.

Now here’s an example of EXCELLENT customer service. Here’s Somm Select:

Thank you for reaching out about our Valentine’s Day shipping cutoff.  For ground shipping, the cutoff is Friday 4 February and for 2 Day Air, the cutoff is 10 February. I do not foresee San Fransisco being a problem at all for ground shipping ( I would not pay for 2 Day Air as your package will never been on a plane from Sonoma to SF). However, New York could be a problem with the weather. Unfortunately, 2 Day Air does not guarantee 2 days from you when you place the order, but from when it is shipped. If the weather does not allow us to ship due to the cold, it could be delayed going out causing it not to arrive in time.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions or if there is anything else I can assist you with!

Best,

Want another direct to the point examples, here’s FirstLeaf:

Hi Mark,

Thank you for reaching out.

Upon checking, Valentine’s Day bundle should be ordered on 2022-02-06 to receive it in time for Valentine’s Day.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns- I’m happy to help!

Most of these are a bit quicker than I’d have expected, but then again they’re assuming you can get it on the day of, which is risky. I do have questions now about where Naked Wines is warehousing because it is quite unusual for a wine club to be able to ship to NY more quickly than SF.
